Topoi (singular: topos = place, domain) are the structural areas into which Stoic philosophy divides human life and thought. Epictetus established this system as a practical organizing principle for philosophical exercises in everyday life—not as an abstract theoretical framework. By distinguishing these three domains, the Stoic learns to focus attention and effort on what is appropriate, and to avoid confusing external events, inner reactions, and moral judgments. The Topoi serve as a mental navigation system for ethical action.
