Taraxis

Taraxis

Inner agitation, turmoil, or confusion of the mind, representing the opposite of ataraxia.

Taraxis (τάραξις) denotes the state of inner unrest, disturbance, and confusion that arises from false judgments and unchecked passions. The term is the etymological counterpart to ataraxia and describes the disorder of the mind when it is misled by external events and fails to distinguish between what is within its power and what is not. Overcoming taraxis is central to the Stoic ideal of tranquility of soul.
