Syneidēsis (from syn = together, eidesis = knowledge/awareness) is the Stoic concept of inner witness or conscience. It denotes the reflexive self-observation of the hegemonikon (the ruling faculty), through which a person critically perceives their own judgements and actions. Syneidēsis is closely connected to prosoche and enables diakope (the interruption) of erroneous judgements. It forms the foundation of moral responsibility.
