Stoa Poikile

Stoa Poikile

The painted colonnade in Athens where Zeno of Citium founded and taught his Stoic school.

The Stoa Poikile (Στοὰ Ποικίλη) was a painted colonnade (stoa) in the Agora of Athens, named after its colorful wall paintings. Around 300 BCE, Zeno of Citium used it as the site of his philosophical teaching and discussions. The name of this hall later became the designation for the entire Stoic school of philosophy, whose followers became known as "Stoics."
