In the Stoic context, 'spiritual exercise' (Gk. askēsis, Lat. exercitatio) refers to a daily, repeated method of training the mind and willpower, through which the philosopher corrects their inner impressions and acts virtuously. It differs fundamentally from theoretical philosophy: whereas theory imparts knowledge, the exercise transforms the person themselves. Prosochē, meletē, and praemeditatio malorum are examples of such spiritual exercises, which remain ineffective without regular practice.
