Reluctant Resistance

Reluctant Resistance

The unconscious or conscious resistance against necessity, causing fate to drag a person along against their will.

In contrast to willing acquiescence, this term describes the state of the ignorant or obstinate person who struggles against cosmic necessity. Fate then carries them along involuntarily, as a rushing current sweeps away a swimmer fighting against it. This is the existential tragedy of ignorance in the Stoic understanding: not fate itself, but ignorance that produces suffering.
