Protropeia

Protropeia

The motivating, orienting force of philosophy that calls and moves a person toward virtue.

Protropeia is the practical, exhortative dimension of philosophy that does not merely instruct but actively drives a person to practice virtue. It differs from pure theory through its purposeful effect: it calls to action, motivates change, and transforms philosophy into a movement of life rather than a collection of knowledge. Epictetus embodies this Protropeia in his discourses through direct address and practical exercises.
