Prosophora

Prosophora

The virtuous, reason-guided offering toward others without expectation of reciprocity or gratitude.

Prosophora (from Greek prós = toward and phérein = to bring/carry) denotes, in the Stoic context, the appropriate and virtuous manner of giving to and helping other people. It differs fundamentally from mere kindness or social convention, as it springs from right reason (orthós logos) rather than from a desire for recognition, reciprocity, or emotional gratification. Prosophora requires the complete separation of the act of giving from any expectations regarding its consequences.
