Prosodeia

Prosodeia

The anticipatory, careful examination of a planned action or goal before acting.

Prosodeia is a central Stoic concept of practical wisdom, denoting the conscious, deliberate investigation of all consequences and requirements of an intended action prior to its execution. It differs from anxiousness in that it is not paralyzing, but instead leads to clear, informed decisions. The concept embodies the Stoic demand to apply the dichotomy of control (what is within our power and what is not) to each individual action. Prosodeia is thus a tool of self-mastery and rational living.
