Prosoche (Continuous Attention to Oneself)

Prosoche (Continuous Attention to Oneself)

The Stoic practice of unceasing inner vigilance and observation of one's own Hegemonikon to safeguard its purity and independence.

Prosoche is not occasional self-reflection but a continuous, active inner vigilance. It describes the Stoic's capacity and duty to constantly observe, examine, and protect the ruling principle (Hegemonikon) against alien impressions, irrational impulses, and external influences. Epictetus emphasizes its unrelenting nature: not when it is convenient, but incessantly.
