Probiosis (from Greek pro = according to, for + bios = life, way of life) denotes the Stoic practice of living according to nature on a personal, not merely universal, level. It is the concrete, daily realization of Stoic ethics through recognition of one's own rational nature and its consistent expression in action. In contrast to abstract philosophical instruction (such as merely knowing the four cardinal virtues), Probiosis demands the existential self-inquiry: "Who am I truly, and do I live in accordance with that nature?" It is the practical enactment of the relationship between the universal nature of the Logos and the individual prohairesis.
