Phobos (fear, anxiety) is the fourth principal category of false passions. It is directed toward future supposed evils that one wishes to escape. It differs from lupē (present pain) in being prospective. The Stoic overcomes phobos through the premise that only moral failure is a genuine evil and that external adversity poses no harm to the virtuous soul.
