According to Stoic doctrine, pathē are inner states that arise from false judgments about external events and destabilize the soul. They encompass four basic forms: desire (epithumia), fear (phobos), delight (hēdonē), and distress (lupē). In contrast to the well-ordered feelings (Eupatheiai), they are rooted in mistaken judgments and subject a person to the whims of external circumstances.
