Ouk eph' hēmin (οὐκ ἐφ' ἡμῖν) encompasses everything that lies outside our direct control: the body and its health, material possessions, social reputation, political positions, and above all the actions of other people. According to Epictetus, the wise person should regard these things as indifferent and not make their inner peace dependent on them, since their availability and fate are ultimately subject to the will of others and to nature.
