Nous (νοῦς) is, in Stoic ontology, the universal, creative intellect that structures and permeates the cosmos. At the same time, Nous is the highest human faculty of cognition — that part of the human being which is directly connected to the cosmic Logos. The Nous of the individual is a fragment of the universal Nous. Through the activation and purification of the Nous, the human being attains wisdom and eudaimonia.
