Nobilitas Animi

Nobilitas Animi

Latin expression for 'nobility of the soul' – the Stoic conviction that true nobility consists in virtue alone.

Nobilitas Animi (nobility of the soul) is Seneca's reformulation of the classical eugeneia concept in a Latin register. The term expresses that inner moral integrity and rational virtue constitute the only genuine form of nobility. This is not mere modesty, but a positive assertion: the soul that subordinates itself to the Logos and exercises its prohairesis (the capacity for moral choice) rightly possesses a higher form of greatness than any dynastic lineage.
