Membership in the Whole (Meleton)

Membership in the Whole (Meleton)

The Stoic understanding of the human being as an inseparable part of a greater organic whole, whose well-being depends on the well-being of all its members.

The human being is not an isolated monad but a member (melos) of a cosmic body. If a person is to love themselves, they must simultaneously understand themselves as a functionary of the whole. This membership is not meant metaphorically but structurally: just as the hand belongs to the body and works for it, so the human being belongs to humanity and the cosmic order. In this understanding, egoism represents not merely a moral failure but a cosmic absurdity.
