Kathēkonta (singular: kathēkon) are actions that arise from one's natural constitution and social standing — such as a son's duty toward his parents or a citizen's duty toward the city. They are not identical with virtue (areté), but can be performed virtuously when they stem from right conviction (orthē doxa) and moral choice (prohairesis). The proxenos fulfills kathēkonta through mutual moral care for his partner.
