Kathegoria Allotria

Kathegoria Allotria

The acknowledgment that others' judgments about you belong to the category of external, uncontrollable things (ta ektos) and therefore cannot hold any inner authority over you.

Kathegoria Allotria (Gk. κατηγορία = categorization + ἀλλότρια = foreign/external things) is a practical epistemic shift: the rational classification of another's judgment not as a potential truth about your essence, but as an external phantasia kataleptike whose synkatathesis lies solely in the power of the other. This is a core aspect of Epictetus's dichotomy: the recognition and practical acceptance of this boundary through conceptual reappraisal.
