Hypomone (ὑπομονή, from hypo = under, meno = remain) denotes in the Stoic context not passive patience or mere resignation, but active, knowing endurance. It is the counterpart to panicked flight or desperate revolt against inevitable evils. The Stoic practises Hypomone by accepting what cannot be changed while simultaneously maintaining his inner disposition (Prohairesis) unshakeably. It unites Kartereia (perseverance) with conscious rational acceptance and is central to the realisation of Stoic freedom.
