Hyle

Hyle

The passive, unformed matter as one of the two Stoic first principles.

Hyle (ὕλη) is, in Stoic physics, the passive substance or material from which all visible things are composed. It is in itself formless and inert, receiving its order and motion only through the active principle of the Logos/Pneuma. Without the animating Logos, Hyle would be mere, sluggish matter; together they constitute the Stoic universe.
