The Hegemonikon is the central locus of Stoic freedom: the rational governing faculty that decides Synkatathesis (assent) and approval. It cannot be manipulated from without; it is absolutely sovereign in its functions of judgment and assent. Epictetus portrays the Hegemonikon as an inner emperor whose independence remains inviolable as long as the individual does not voluntarily surrender their inner authority. In practice, the Hegemonikon is the seat of Prohairesis and the anchor of ethical responsibility.
