Fortuna

Fortuna

The Roman goddess of luck, depicted with a rudder (symbol of control) and a cornucopia (symbol of abundance); a psychological principle representing the unpredictability of external circumstances.

Fortuna is the Roman counterpart of Tyche, but with a significant distinction: the rudder does not signify that humans are in control, but rather that Fortuna herself holds the helm. The cornucopia symbolises her power to both bestow and withdraw. For the Stoics, Fortuna becomes a didactic metaphor: she governs everything outside of eph' hēmin, and therefore the only rational response is to make one's prohairesis (inner disposition) independent of her.
