Fatum

Fatum

The inevitable, predetermined fate or cosmic necessity to which all events are subject.

Fatum (Lat.) denotes, in the Stoic context, the inescapable chain of all events governed by the rational laws of the cosmos. It is not mere arbitrariness, but the logical expression of the universal Logos. The Stoic recognizes Fatum not as an external tyranny, but as the intelligent ordering principle to which he can consciously give his assent. The love of fate (Amor Fati) is the practical consequence of this insight.
