Epithumia

Epithumia

The passion of irrational desire: an unfounded craving for something future that one mistakenly regards as a good.

Epithumia (desire, craving) is one of the four main categories of false passions. It differs from hedone in that it is directed toward future objects not yet obtained, to which one ascribes goodness. It is irrational because it arises not from reason but from blind longing. The Stoic overcomes epithumia by recognising that external goods are not genuine goods.
