Epieikeia

The capacity to apply a general rule to a concrete particular case in a way that serves the rule's deeper purpose, even when its literal wording falls short.

Epieikeia is the Stoic adaptation of the Aristotelian concept of equity. It does not describe the softening of rules, but rather a deeper fidelity to their inner purpose through situationally calibrated judgment. Where positive law cannot anticipate every case, the wise person is guided by how the legislator would have ruled had they known of that particular case. Epieikeia bridges universal norms with concrete contingency through practical wisdom.
