Ephodos

Ephodos

The access point, opportunity, or entry into virtuous practice that every obstacle offers the Stoic.

Ephodos (Greek: access, approach) is a concept in Stoic philosophy — found especially in Marcus Aurelius — according to which every antikeimenon (obstacle) functions as an ephodos: a direct, practical gateway to the exercise and deepening of virtue. An obstacle becomes a training ground not merely in spite of its adversity, but precisely because of it. It is the ever-renewed entry point into concrete virtuous practice.
