Enkrateia

Self-mastery and strength of will in controlling desires and passions through conscious effort.

Enkrateia denotes the active force of self-overcoming and volitional control by which a person tames their lower drives. It differs from sophrosyne in that it implies effort and inner struggle, whereas sophrosyne represents a natural inner equilibrium. Enkrateia is necessary for someone who is not yet fully wise and must contend with resistant impulses.
