Ektasis (Greek: ἔκστασις, from ek = out and stasis = standing position) literally means stepping out of the self's ordinary standpoint. In Stoic philosophy it is not an ecstatic rapture but a sober mental exercise and technique of self-observation. It enables the practitioner to create space between the immediate impression (phantasia) and their conscious assent (synkatathesis), thereby interrupting the automatic reactions of the hegemonikon.
