Ekklisis

Ekklisis

The natural aversion or turning away from something; the opposite of orexis (desire).

In Stoic psychology, ekklisis denotes the impulse of aversion — the involuntary inner movement away from something. It is the counterpart to orexis and, like it, can be trained through rational alignment. Both impulse types are adiaphora (indifferent) in their raw form; only assent (synkatathesis) transforms them into morally relevant actions. Epictetus treats ekklisis as part of the three disciplines.
