Doxa

Doxa

The judgment or personal belief formed through assent (Synkatathesis), which can be the source of both virtue and passion.

Doxa is not mere opinion in the modern sense, but the active judgment a person renders on an impression. A correct doxa (orthē doxa) leads to Ataraxia; a faulty doxa (doxa hamartanē) gives rise to Pathos. The governance of one's doxai — their critical examination through Prosoche and Diakope — is the core business of Stoic living and the foundation of Sophron.
