Dogma

Dogma

A foundational, rational belief that forms the basis of Stoic conduct in life.

In the Stoic context, a dogma is not an unfounded opinion but a firmly established rational conviction — such as the belief that virtue is the only good. Dogmata are instilled through askesis (philosophical training) and stabilize the prohairesis against conflicting impressions. They are the operative pegmata (fixed teachings) that can be activated whenever needed.
