Organism (cosmic)

Organism (cosmic)

The Stoic conception of the universe as a living, unified being rather than a sum of separate mechanisms.

The Stoics understood the cosmos not as a machine of independent parts, but as a living, intelligent organism in which every element fulfils a functional role within the whole. Just as in a human body — where liver, heart, and fingers are animated by a single life-force — all components of the universe are enlivened and coordinated by the Logos-Pneuma. This is the foundation for sympatheia and for the insight that personal well-being is inseparably bound up with the well-being of the whole.
