Automated Synkatathesis (Unconscious Synkatathesis)

Automated Synkatathesis (Unconscious Synkatathesis)

Habituated assent to impressions that has been withdrawn from conscious will, solidified through repeated uncritical acceptance.

In contrast to deliberative synkatathesis (conscious assent following examination), this form denotes a solidified, reflexive assent practice that operates without an intermediary prosoche practice. The article implicitly identifies this state when Epictetus warns that one acts "from reflex regardless," even amid intensive philosophical study. This automated form is the central obstacle to Stoic practice, as it renders the diakope tēs synkatatheseos (interruption of assent) impossible.
