Autarkeia

Autarkeia

The capacity and state of self-sufficiency and inner independence from external fortune.

Autarkeia (from autos = self, and arkein = to suffice) denotes in Stoicism the state of complete inner independence: the virtuous person does not depend on external goods or circumstances, since virtue is the only true good and lies entirely within our power. This does not mean isolation, but inner freedom amid social and external obligations. It is the practical realization of the dichotomy of control in everyday life.
