Assent (Rational Approval)

Assent (Rational Approval)

The conscious act of rational approval of an impression (phantasia), through which the hegemonikon renders a judgment and thereby moves toward inner or outer action.

Assent is not passive or automatic, but an active act of will by the hegemonikon. Between the perception of an impression and its acceptance lies the critical space in which the Stoic can choose whether to assent or not. This moment of conscious approval is the core of Stoic freedom of action: it is not external events that control us, but our assent to them.
