Aporia (Greek: ἀπορία, literally 'pathlessness') denotes in Stoic philosophy the consciously acknowledged state of ignorance and disorientation that arises when established convictions collapse under critical scrutiny. This state is not to be regarded negatively; rather, it marks the legitimate beginning of genuine thought and self-knowledge. The Stoic tradition adopted this concept from Socrates and made it a central element of philosophical practice and training (askesis).
