Apochē

Apochē

The suspension of judgment or assent when clarity is lacking.

Apochē literally means 'withholding' and denotes the practice of refraining from synkatathesis when an impression is not sufficiently clear or certain. It is a Stoic virtue of caution and mental clarity. The sage prefers to make no judgment rather than a false one. This discipline protects against confusion and the misguided impulses that arise from it.
