Anamelete

Anamelete

The untrained or unguarded mind; the state in which the hegemonikon remains without askesis and kathexis, leaving it vulnerable to false opinions.

Anamelete describes the lack of systematic training (melete) and practice. An anamelete mind is like a body without physical exercise: weak, ungainly, and easily wounded. Epictetus emphasizes that mere intellectual insight (such as understanding the dichotomia tou ephésomenos) is worthless without subsequent askesis and kathexis. The student who does not practice daily remains anamelete and will fail when crisis comes.
