Adiaphora

Adiaphora

External things that are neither good nor bad because they lie outside our control and do not determine the virtuous life.

Adiaphora (from a = not, and diapherein = to make a difference) are, in Stoic ethics, all external goods such as wealth, health, reputation, beauty, or poverty. They are morally indifferent, since they are neither virtue nor vice and do not lie within our direct control. They may make life easier or harder, but the virtuous person retains their moral integrity regardless of their presence or absence.
